Divorce and dissolution are the legal processes by which a marriage or civil partnership is ended. Whilst they have different names, there is no real distinction between the two.

Since April 2022, and the introduction of ‘no fault’ divorce, the process is very straight forward. There is no longer any requirement to place blame on each other, and the whole process can be completed online.

Save in very limited circumstances, it is no longer possible for one party to contest a divorce application.  Examples of these circumstances are: an argument about jurisdiction, one party’s capacity or the existence of a valid marriage.

In most cases, the divorce/dissolution process will be purely administrative, with no need for the parties to attend any court hearing and the process will typically take between six and ten months.
