Family law firm Burgess Mee was highly commended for its trauma initiative in the Excellence in Client Service category at The Lawyer Awards, which took place last night in London.
In a market first, Burgess Mee has trained all its solicitors by a specialist trauma clinic to recognise the signs of trauma and to understand how it might affect clients –particularly during pressure points in the legal process, so that they can then identify adjustments to best support them.
Burgess Mee has also created a unique trauma resource, www.withinthewindow.com, with Rosefield Divorce Consultancy, which provides free legal, therapeutic, and emotional support for those going through a divorce. Burgess Mee is also calling on the rest of the family law profession to become trauma informed.
Antonia Mee, Senior Partner at Burgess Mee, said:“ We’re delighted that The Lawyer Awards have recognised our trauma initiative.
“Trauma affects the human mind and body but, as solicitors, we have rarely factored this knowledge into how we support our clients. However, many of our clients are experiencing trauma, whether from childhood, their relationship breakdown or the legal process itself.
“We felt we would be able to give these clients a better service by recognising symptoms of trauma and adapting our practices to ensure they can engage in the process in a more effective and less re-traumatising way.”
